Veronica, Logan, Wallace, Mac, and Dick are freshmen at Neptune’s Hearst College when the third season begins. Two new regular main characters are introduced: Stosh “Piz” Piznarski and Parker Lee, Wallace and Mac’s respective roommates.
The fourth season opens in 2019 with Veronica living with Logan in Neptune and still solving mysteries with Keith.

Thomas decided to introduce new characters for the series’ second season, including Jackie Cook, a romantic interest of Wallace’s, and Dick Casablancas and Cassidy “Beaver” Casablancas. Dunn left the series midway through the season.
The third season introduced two new series regulars, Parker Lee and Stosh “Piz” Piznarski. Parker was Mac’s extroverted roommate and Piz was Wallace’s roommate and a music lover with his campus radio show.
Rob Thomas originally wrote Veronica Mars as a young adult novel for the publishing company Simon & Schuster but changed the protagonist to a female because he thought a noir piece told from a female point of view would be more interesting and unique.

Kristen Bell was chosen to play Veronica Mars by more than 500 women who auditioned for the role. Jason Dohring originally auditioned for the role of Duncan but ended up portraying Logan.
Percy Daggs III auditioned for Wallace Fennel’s role twice and took three tests with studio and network executives. Amanda Seyfried was cast as Lilly Kane and ended up being used three or four more times than initially planned.
The first two seasons of Veronica Mars had a season-long mystery arc, while the third season featured two smaller mystery arcs.
Thomas felt that Bell had been overworked in the first season and that the second season’s mystery arcs had “way too many suspects, way too many red herrings”.

The pilot was originally darker in tone than the one aired, and Thomas intended to take the script to FX, HBO, or Showtime, but UPN only wanted it a bit lighter to match their standards and practices.
The series was filmed at Stu Segall Productions in San Diego, California, and at Oceanside High School, University of San Diego, University of California, San Diego, and San Diego State University. The fourth season was filmed at the Sea Sprite Hotel in Hermosa Beach, California.
Dandy Warhols’ song “We Used to Be Friends” was used as the series theme song. Composer Josh Kramon used piano, vibraphone, and guitar, and processed and filtered the sounds to create a modern noir vibe.
The crew had a “spotting session” to decide what type of music would be featured in the episodes, and Kramon composed and created the whole score without another musician.
In January 2007, Dawn Ostroff announced that Veronica Mars would be put on hiatus after the February sweeps to air a new reality series, Pussycat Dolls Present. In June 2007, TV Guide confirmed that Veronica Mars was canceled.
Thomas stated that he was interested in writing a feature film based on the series and that he would like to bring back the key players and show Veronica Mars solving crimes in college rather than as an FBI agent.
In September 2008, Rob Thomas told Entertainment Weekly that he had hit a wall in the final act of the Veronica Mars movie and that he still wanted to make it. In June 2009, Kristen Bell said that she didn’t think the movie would ever happen.
Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell launched a Kickstarter campaign to get the film made, and the goal was met within 10 hours. The campaign raised $5,702,153, and production began in June 2013, with a projected early 2014 release.
